Fashion walkway : Journey through Singapore's Universities
Hmmm... jus cut my hair jus now. Was so freaking pissed off with the effect when i got home that i trimmed it again myself. First time i ever layed a scissors on my own hair. Better. But still... grrrr...
School reopening next week.
Will still be working at the law firm for awhile, but as a part-time this time, for maybe another 2-3wks till their perm staff gets transferred over.
Pay's better this time round, but since i'm onli working 2-3 days per wk, and not whole day at that, its not going to be much anyway.
All of it's going into the rest of my sch fees which is why i'm not going to go for the hair package this time round. Maybe when i get my next or next next pay i'll scout around for anymore good deals if i cant stand my hair then. Nevertheless, may (DIY) dye my hair next two days before sch starts... Hair is already so damaged, but cant stand to go to sch with a head of two distinct colours.
Though the part-time job's onli for a couple of weeks, but for the days that i've to go down work in the noon n sch in the morning, i have to dress for work. Man... i'm going to look so over-dressed n out of place for school -.-
Wanna tan, but not much time left unless i go Hx's place tml to tan, but Sunday's condo pool is sure to be packed. Meeting Hx to trim eyebrows at Bpp in the noon. Which if gone thru successfully, wud also be her first time eyebrow trimming. Looking forward to the effect.
Getting my sis to do the dye job either tml or monday nite. Have to shop for a suitable colour tml.
Wonder wat colour to choose...

Recently Urban (the tabloid that comes with Strait Times once a week) featured an exclusive doing a comparison on the fashion/dressings among the THREE Singapore universities - NUS, NTU and SMU.
SMU 'won marginally' becos they are a city campus n since its located in Orchard, the students cant wear too shabbily to sch rite? But SMU won mainly becos, really, there wasn't any competition to start with - its well known how the vast majority of NUS and NTU students go to sch in T-shirts n shorts. But its also understandable becos most of the students stay in on-campus dorms and hostels. When sch is jus a ten mins walk away, who wud bother to dress up, accesorise, wear makeup n kitten heels, jus for a lecture that lasts two hours, when u'll have to remove the makeup when u return to ya dorm before it even has the chance to smudge?
Still, NUS' Law and Arts & Social Science faculties came in a close second - the former becos law students have a duty to look presentable, esp as a form of early training for when they enter the workforce, the later becos, as we all noe, Arts pple are jus more... intuned with themselves, n therefore, by default, their appearances.
The very first thing about the article that struck me actually was - Bloody hell, isn't SIM a Singapore uni?!
Why aren't our students taken into consideration? I tot, unless i'm mistaken n someone shd tell me if i'm mistaken, that SIM has pretty officially become Singapore's fourth university? The last time i returned to SIM, which was ytd when i went to make payment for my sch fees, the newly placed words SIM UNIVERSITY was very obvious above our main entrance.
IF THEY HAD BOTHERED TO INCLUDE SIM AMONG THE OTHER UNIS, THERE WUD BE NO COMPETITION AT ALL ALL RIGHT??!
Its not that i'm such a loyal supporter of my sch or that i have so much sch spirit, it jus irks me to noe that pple openly tot nothing bout SIM when they tot 'Singapore U'. We work our butts off (ok, i cant say the same for myself, but i can vouch for most of my schmates) cramming for our tests n exams which are no easier than other NUS and NTU student's! Our (again, i speak for UOL students) exams are not chicken feet, we're talking papers set by world-famous lecturers/examiners from the world renowned University of London and London School of Economics! n SIM has been around as a university for decades. So why aren't we included in the ranks of "Singapore's universities"?!
n as for the fashion part, the average SIM student beats any NUS, NTU or SMU students hands down on their best day on our average day thru no major consciousness or effort on our part. No conscious of our effort in dressing up n i still cn stte this u say? Not being conscious of it doesn't mean i'm dense, it jus means that it has become so much of a routine for us to look at least presentable in sch that the tot of the efforts we put into it are pretty much discounted.
The statement may sound like a brag or an overstatement, but anyone who takes a walk thru SIM on any average day wud see the truth of wat i mean.
Its likened to taking a walk downtown where though there are the odd shorts n t-shirt sorts of pple, the majority of folks u see wud be clad in some of their more fashionable threads.
SIM wud win any inter-uni fashion competition any time man.
(Which brings me back to the beginning, why aren't we included as one of Singapore's U?!)
Its like "The O.C" ok? unlike wat the journalist who wrote the article says:
that NUS and NTU are "no The O.C" (The American drama serial centered on university life of alot of good-looking teenage characters n equally good-looking clothes). The same journalist who has clearly either left uni life a too-long time ago to understand even NUS and NTU's preference of schwear for its convenience, or have never ever experienced uni life in Singapore before. Overseas student or poly mass comm grad i dun care; he/she shdn't be making sweeping statements about the student life he does not know about.
Though that week's Urban certainly caught my attention with its exclusive, it makes for a very infuriating read. Not only for the writer's poor penmanship, selectively biased interviews and investigations that comes short of proving his point, but also becos the plain fact of their purposeful or incidental exclusion of SIM does not sit well with me at all.
Ok, i shall not gripe further. Its a tabloid after all.
Except that becos Urban was under SPH, i expected more than such biased n shallow investigations of a fad that tens of thousands of uni-students islandwide could easily refute.
Its late n i've finished griping.
Good nite.
