Invigorating
The time is 11.30pm and you start running.
It is a starless night and all is quiet. But there are the ubiquitious streetlamps placed every fifteen meters to bathe ya path in orange.
The low baritonous voice and soothing music from your mp3 player surrounds your senses and covers your running footsteps and low shallow breathing. Closed from the world, your mind jumps from one matter to the next, one memory after another, in the incongruent sequence only a person who has no immediate schedules has the luxury to indulge in.
You stare unseeingly straight ahead into the distance, the dark night merging with the warm glow of the streetlamps all around you, as you pass by the intermittent road signs and trafficlights and tree after tree after tree.
Less than two rounds later, your mp3 player unexpectedly dies on you and you stop to shake it umpteen times in disbelief, cursing quietly to yourself that you have just changed its battery less than three days ago.
You wrap your hand around it and continue running, wondering how long you'll last without it until you stop out of boredom. You discover that time passes inordinately faster when you had music blaring in your ears.
But as you pick up your pace, the world falls away again and the thump-thump-thump of your rubber-soled running shoes on concrete and the therapeautic sounds of your easy breathing hypnotises you into the cloudy state of un-seeing thinking once more.
You pass by the lone solitary figure sitting on the granite bench, the occasional passer-bys decked out in t-shirt, shorts and slippers and the schoolgirl hugging her books and instrument case to her chest as she walks, and a few cars coast pass you in a wake of red and orange blinking rear lights. But they are no more than just hazy spectres passing by the side of your vision.
You feel like you are the only person alive in the world.
And you feel on top of the world.
And you remember again why you fell in love with running at night.
You finally stop not because you are tired, but because your sister has called out for you from the kitchen window when you pass by your block. Your world shifts back into focus as you trot to a stop.
You have long lost count of how many rounds you ran. When you answered her, it was followed by a cough and a clearing of the throat, and you remember that you have forgotten you are still in the midst of recovering from a cold. You decide to wrap up your last round and head home.
As you stand on the sidewalk and recovered your breath from your last half round sprint, you look at your watch.
The numbers on your electronic sport watch illuminates 12:45.
